A horse loses electrolytes daily through sweating, urination and via the feces. It is good to keep this loss of fluid and electrolytes in balance. When this gets out of balance, your horse can retain less fluid, the elasticity of the skin decreases and the endurance decreases.
HorseFlex Electrolyte Mix is a supplementary feed for horses to support the fluid and electrolyte balance. This mix of electrolytes is 100% sugar-free and consists of various minerals such as sodium, potassium and calcium that are important for the fluid balance of a horse. Very suitable when your horse loses a lot of fluid.
Electrolytes are minerals that the horse’s body needs for, among other things, fluid balance, muscle function and nerves. For example, electrolytes are needed to prevent the body from becoming acidic after physical exertion. A horse that sweats, loses not only fluid but also a large portion of electrolytes. In principle, the horse’s body is able to replenish the lost electrolytes itself when a horse sweats occasionally. However, when a horse sweats regularly and/or frequently, for example due to heavy exertion or warm weather, a shortage of electrolytes can occur.
A horse loses electrolytes daily through sweating, urination and faeces. During periods of exertion, such as competitions and training, a horse can lose considerably more electrolytes, especially when it is very warm. It is good to keep this loss of fluid and electrolytes in balance. With a shortage of electrolytes, your horse will be less able to retain fluid, the elasticity of the skin will decrease and the endurance will decrease. By adding extra electrolytes as a powder to the drinking water, you ensure that the fluid and electrolyte content in your horse’s body remains in balance. HorseFlex Electrolyte mix can also be added to the daily feed, but make sure that there is always enough fresh drinking water available.
With an average effort of about an hour of trotting and galloping at normal temperatures, a 500 kg horse loses about 5 to 7 litres of sweat. Under these conditions, your horse can still sufficiently replenish the lost electrolytes with a salt lick and via its daily ration. When your horse makes the same effort at high temperatures, your horse can lose 10 to 12 litres of sweat. Under these conditions, a horse cannot replenish the lost body salts quickly enough with just its ration and it may be advisable to give extra electrolytes as a powder.
In addition to adding electrolytes, there are other things you can do to support your horse in hot weather. Think about providing shade in the pasture and increasing the intensity of your training.
